VirtuaVerse

Best "Point-and-Click" Since the 90s

In the late 90s I was totally obsessed with the LucasArts adventures, and while many have tried to revive this ailing genre since then, I have found all of their attempts leaving much to be desired. Until now. 'Virtuaverse' initially appealed to me because of its heavy cyberpunk theme and promising-looking screenshots. I waited until the GOG Summer Sale to pick this up, but had I waited just one more day I could have got it for free in a giveaway! I'm a bit annoyed I missed that opportunity. But that is by-the-by... Having played and completed the game, I can say this is absolutely my favourite point-and-click adventure of the 21st century. 'Virtuaverse' takes what made the LucasArts adventure games special and brings those elements into the 1920 x 1080 format. It just gets it right. This is a true work of art. The graphics, interface and music are first-rate. There are parts of the game which remind me so strongly of 'The Dig', 'Indiana Jones & The of Atlantis' and 'Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge', it almost feels like you're replaying them, within the context of some kind of surreal dream. The story is also highly engaging if you are a fan of the likes of 'The Matrix' movies or especially the Netflix 'Altered Carbon' TV series. My only reservation is that it's not suitable for a younger audience (unless your standards are considerably lower than mine). The game features some graphic sexual content at one point, which is completely unavoidable (it's even part of the puzzles). There's also a notable use of the 'F-word' throughout the game. Although the game has a few easter eggs referencing classic games from the 90s, this is certainly geared toward a much more mature audience. Unlike, say, 'The Secret of Monkey Island', I would *never* play 'Virtuaverse' around my kids! Overall this game was an amazing experience for me and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes cyberpunk and is nostalgic for the LucasArts 'golden age' of classic adventure games.
