Heroes of Might and Magic® 3: Complete

Popular but... utterly outdated

A nerdy game for the nerds. I was a teenager in the 90's and I had hours to spend on games but even then, I wouldn't have enjoyed a game like HoMM3. I totally missed it 25 years ago for Diablo, Baldur's gate, AoE and the likes (which are nerdy and time consuming games too... and also fun and nervous). HoMM3 requires patience and affinity for mathematics. It's not fun. It's lonnnnnnnng. And at the end it is utterly boring. I can understand the attraction this game is doing on old farts like me : the 90's fantasy graphics, the lore, the musics, the D&D - TSR ambiance, all of this is such appealing for the nostalgics. But is doesn't make a game "fun" either. I know that HoMM3 is one of the most popular games here on GOG but I'll not be part of the hype. I'm not snobbish. It's just that spending ages on a rainy afternoon for taking hundreds turns to create heroes chains to bring my army to the other side of the map is a chore. Calculating that using the roads takes less step points than using the grass terrain is a chore. Not saying about the frustration after raiding all the enemies cities to see one bot coming from nowhere and crushing you like you never existed and battled during the previous 3 hours because the AI is nothing but a calculator. I'm sure the ones who like this game are sincere. It's just that I don't have the temper and patience for it. And if I would have any affinity for mathematics I would play chess. Old timers are buying this wittingly. Young folks that want to give it a try be warned. Or buy it on sales.
