I love the game's atmosphere. They clearly put a lot of effort into building the ships and it's an interesting adventure. It's also quite a disturbing game. I found it exceptionally unnerving on my first play. And the story is compelling and keeps you driven to finish the game. The RPG elements are interesting, but I felt a lot of that was redundant or uninteresting. The respawning baddies are irritating, and so is the weapon degradation. And the later areas of the game don't have the same level of quality as the earlier parts. I found the layout of the second ship to be somewhat nonsensical. Overall this is a classic sci-fi horror first-person RPG experience.
What we have here is a game with some rather pretty graphics for the day, set in some interesting locales with a generally creepy vibe. I'm pretty sure these two factors are what made it appealing to people. It's not really a scary game. It's basically a fast-paced shooter built around a Lovecraft vibe. Some of it works and is entertaining, but it gets old and it drags on.
An incredibly intense horror experience that has seemingly no limits to what it will subject you to. Beautiful visuals, excellent audio work and finely tuned gameplay in the same vein as the original game. I finished it and found it to be a satisfying game overall. Don't buy this if you are in any way squeamish or don't want to deal with constant horrific chases in darkness.
