I have almost completed this game shortly after launch, and now started a new save and completed it. As many have correctly pointed out, this game was in a pretty sorry state at launch. However, it seems they really have fixed it now. I haven't noticed any bugs in v1.205, and the addition of the zombie mechanic in free patches has also fixed the gameplay, which was too grindy originally. So, what do you get? A fun game in which you play a graveyard keeper that butchers and buries bodies, holds different church services with rousing sermons (I don't wanna spoiler it, but I love it), you can plant and harvest various crops (or let zombies do it) and do quests for the townspeople. There's also a dungeon with 15 levels to fight in, simple fishing, etc. The humour is quite good, but pretty silly. As for the expansion stranger sins: I would suggest play this for a couple of hours first. If you like it grab the expansion, too.
A good expansion, I quite liked the tavern and the ability to use zombies to deliver it is great. The little bits of story you get to watch were also quite amusing and fit well into the game. The way the tavern works is also a good expansion that works well. There is one, in my view very irritating, flaw though: If you complete the main story (where you place two times three items in a certain place) then the game ends, without saving. If you play like me and fill up energy with grapes.... well, it had been a couple of hours since I had last saved. Very annoying. Other than that though, I haven't noticed any bugs in v1.205. I'd also like to be able to continue playing even after completing the main story, especially since I hadn't completed the tavern yet.
This game is primarily a narrative game with only a bit of simple gameplay mechanics. So, the game stands or falls on the story - and the story is good. It's a bit like 'life is strange' actually, you even get an overview of what choices you've made at the end. I really hope they'll make further episodes of this.
As many others have already pointed out it's a good story, and I definitely enjoyed this game. Unfortunately the main gameplay can be a bit tedious and sometimes too RNG-y, and there's also quite a few gameplay bugs (though most of them are not too big, and there weren't any gamebreakers or crashes).
As noted in another review, this game has two distinct phases. You can play it normal (scavenge, then survive on what you scavenged) or play just one of the phases. The scavenging: I didnt like this part. The amount of time is just way too short and the controls are ok, but certainly not great, and given that you only have 60 seconds to collect every split-second lost is painful. The survival: This part is good. You have to ration the food&drink using a simple system and are given a series of choices on how/whether to act. The writing is excellent and the consequences are often surprising. There is indeed only a limited amount of strategy but this isn't a game you'll be spending 500 hours on. Bugs/polish: Good, the game runs smooth for me, you can set control options (I know, should be a given - but some devs fail on this). Only bug I encountered was that after I successfully completed a run it still told me that I perished on the end screen, but that's completely inconsequential. I spent about 3 hours on it so far and will probably play it another few times for 30-60 mins each.
