Sure, it's not a direct progression from BG2, but Laian has demonstrated that they're masterful at writing compelling characters, and stories, so ultimately this is the best outcome. BG3 would never be BG2+ because that era of CRPGs is gone, and for good reason. BG3 is a triumph. It's what other developers should look to when considering what they can inovate upon in their own work.
