This game, while not being too sophisticated by modern standards, was a great fun and advanced 4x title for its time. Diplomacy is all well and good while you're building up your empire, but the game really shines when you start slugging it out for supremacy. There's a good variety of ships and missiles you can research and build to dominate the enemy, but for extra fun buy black market purchases to give you some new tools and hard to find resources to throw those asteroid annihilators or species killing viral infections at an unsuspecting world.
