Darkwood

Atmospheric but not original

So this game actually is “This War of Mine” in a different setting, seen from above with you actually having to walk between locations minus the starvation factor plus a character skill building system. The resource management system, is also quite similar. Having played TWOM recently I must admit I didn’t find Darkwood that much of an original game. Atmosphere is ok, but shouldn’t be described as “horror”. Graphics are “vintage” but this doesn’t really affect game experience. They actually give a gritty Amiga-esque look to the whole thing which adds to the atmosphere. I would’ve preferred a different font though. Music is immersive although the buildups feel a bit too much as the actual game doesn’t reach the “horror” level that the soundtrack implies. There are some design issues like repetitive dialogue screens e.g. when you interact with the trader and slow character movement that hinter game flow. I have spent couple of hours with it and I must say that I am struggling to maintain my interest. Good thing I bought it on sale here. Anyhow, if you haven’t played any other post apocalyptic games with survival and crafting aims you’ll probably have a whole different experience than I did, that’s why I won’t rate it under 3 stars.
