Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising

Stil a must play- loads of fun!

Playing through this game again after over 20 years have past, it's obvious the world of gaming has moved on. Low definition textures and a compromise resolution don't stop this from still being one of the most fun games I've ever played. From the time I played the demo disc version of this as a child, I knew it was a winner. Definitely a forgotten gem as the developer shuttered a couple of years after. Managing resources and directing units are only small parts of what make this game so special. Jumping into any vehicle at any time into the thick of battle, while directing in real time gives a rush of adrenaline as your units become overwhelmed. Not to worry; take a breather in the war room and come up with a new plan of attack. Maybe retreat your units to a position where they can regroup andd gain an advantage, all while the game is paused and you have a commanding view of the battlefield. The most important part of what makes this game stands out is the voice acting combined with the AI. Your units all have unique personalities and habits due to them being saved on "soulcatcher chips" which retained their mind after death. This allows you to recycle them over and over again. The banter between this colorful group is absolutely nonstop and they will call out enemy forces, their views on being brought back from the dead, compliments and complaints about one another as well as acknowledge you entering their vehcile for direct control. By the end of the game you know each of their skillsets, their strengths and weaknesses. You instantly know who is in trouble (as well as who is most likely to get themselves in said trouble!) and can plan accordingly. They feel like an actual team of people working together which is rare for such an old game. All in all, this game has a bit of something for everyone. If you like RTS games, try it. If you like vehicle based shooters, try it. You may be surprised. There is definitely a learning curve due to the controls. BE
