Kenshi

A unique and challenging gem of a game

There's too much about this game to cover in a review. It might not be much to look at and the camera jank is some of the worst I've seen, but there is so much content. The quaint graphics and wasteland vibe of large portions of the map as well as the click to move controls make it feel like some combination of Morrowind and Runescape, but it is also quite unique and not really like either game. There's no real story surrounding the player but there is a lot of lore in the form of books and overhearing conversations at bars. You develop your own story as you adventure and make a name for yourself. You're no one special at the start but you can change that and play any way you wish. The map is huge, but even more importantly, every corner is filled with content and stories just waiting to be told. Over 100 hours in and I've barely even ventured out of the starting areas. There's just so much to do and see. You can build a base, buy a house in a local town, or be an adventurer just wandering the lands with no true home. You'll encounter friends who may want to join your party and you may be glad for some friends when you're left bruised and bleeding from a bandit raid, or worse, the dreaded Beak Thing who'll happily eat you while you lie there unconscious. The "world states" also means that you can have a real effect on the world. Taking out leaders could mean their enemies take their cities or they turn to ghost towns. You can make allies of local factions by turning in bounties. Hate the racism and misogyny of the Holy Nation? Take their lord Phoenix to the Shek. Not only might their kingdom fall but the Shek will becomes your allies. Or you can ally with the Flotsam Ninjas, a group of mostly female outcasts tired of being mistreated. Want a real challenge, try starting as a slave and build up your skills to escape or start in cannibal territory and try not to get eaten. The world is your oyster and you can do almost anything in this living and breathing world.
