Project Warlock

Decent Retro Shooter That Needs Focus

Pretty good retro shooter that could stand to lose two stages and have some more verticality. It's odd to see a game inspired by Doom go the way of Wolfenstien 3D and have very little vertical space. Some enemies are big enough to stand above the crowd and some fly two feet off the ground, but beyond that I didn't see a point to the y-axis in this game. Maybe this was to limit scope and give the developer freedom to add 72 monsters, +10 weapons(with 2 mods each), skill points, and spells, but most of those add very little variety to the game. This game also needs better levels. I'd gladly loose a third of the arsenal, the Egyptian zone, and turn hell into a single remix level if it meant that the castle, artic, and city zones had better set pieces and design. The whole limited lives issue only came up once for me and never again, but I don't think it adds much. I guess I looked for secrets a little harder? But none of the secrets really felt special or hard to find. Most of the bosses were cool in concept, but some of them were pathetically easy and the last boss glitched out for me right when I beat him. Not too bad. Look forward to what the developer puts out next, but pray they learn from it's peers(Amid Evil, Dusk, Ion Fury) and cut smorgasbords of enemies in favor of fantastic levels.
