Solid deck-building game

A solid deck-building / RPG / escape room (?) game. Its biggest problem is that it starts with the best part first - Act I, as a standalone, is one of the best games I've played in a long time. Act II is good fun, but Act III is a drag - the mechanics get tired and it's just too long.

Cult of the Lamb

Charming, but unfortunately tedious

The combat is straightforward and fun. The story is engaging, the worldbuilding is fantastic. Most of the tedium comes into play with basebuilding, which the game designers made to be intentionally tedious and time-consuming. Want to select a new ability in the tree? You have to hold the select button for a solid five seconds. Why? Just to make you seem like you're doing work. A lot of the mechanics are like that... your followers and grow food, but you have to cook it. You have to preach a sermon every day to keep faith up. You have to clean up your followers' poop. All this busywork adds up. There were times when I wanted to venture back out into the wilds and fight the elder gods, but then I realized I needed to clean up poop and make dinner. Not my bag, as it turns out.

Brutally difficult and a ton of fun

A 2.5D retro FPS with beautiful, neo-Quake movement, a not-too large selection of weapons, and fairly satisfying combat. - The game looks great - The movement is fantastic - bunnyhop across the map like Ranger and Bitterman only dreamed of - The weapons are good. They do miss trade some visceral punchiness for sci-fi laser sounds - The level design can be a little bit on the slaughter-map side. I don't enjoy enemies spawning behind me... but, okay, fine - An actually engaging story, believe it or not! Well-written good voice-acting - Brutally difficult. I'm usually an UltraViolence / Hard kind of guy, but I almost turned this down to the lowest difficulty at one point Overall, well worth the $13 I paid for it, and I'm looking forward to the coming episodes.

Falls short of its promise.

Good: The central game mechanic, that of hacking the game from inside the game, is one of the best ideas ever. Honestly great for people who are looking for a fun way to start learning to program. Bad: The plot is pretty boring - the characters are shallow and the story moves along at a glacial pace. The biggest shame is that the plot is mostly running around, not doing that much programming. Ugly: When you actually have to program your way out of a bug. Or, wait, maybe that's a plus...

Darkwood

Survival Horror done well

Great atmosphere, solid story. I've been aggravated by the clunky fighting mechanics (though I think that's a feature, rather than a flaw), and sometimes dodging enemies and camoflagued bear traps gets old.

Good for wasting time, not much else.

Great game... for your phone. At $3, this is a great time-waster - perfect for standing in line at the license bureau. That being said, don't expect much depth. Kind of like 80 Days, but without all the weird "story-telling."
