Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Lock & Load

*Call of Juarez: Gunslinger* took me by surprise. As someone who enjoys fast-paced FPS games with a strong narrative, this one checked all the boxes. The storytelling is its standout feature—Silas Greaves’ unreliable narration adds a clever twist, making each level feel dynamic and unpredictable. I loved how the environments changed based on his tall tales. The gunplay is tight and satisfying, with stylish slow-mo kills and an old-school arcade vibe. The cel-shaded graphics give it a comic book feel that works perfectly with the Western setting. It's not the longest game, but it doesn’t overstay its welcome, and the New Game Plus mode adds replay value. Some enemy AI can be a bit basic, but the fun factor more than makes up for it. Overall, *Gunslinger* is a hidden gem for Western fans and FPS lovers alike—definitely worth the ride.

O.D.T.: Escape... Or Die Trying

Nostalgia blow, yet lacks a spark or two

My pack-in game with the PsOne (waaay) back in the days. Can't believe, this is actually legaly playable on a Win11 machine in 2022! Never tried the PC version (didn't even have a PC back then lol) so I never actually got familiar with the keyboard controlls. For everyone who remembers the PSX gamepad controlls, this may present a bit of a challenge at first but hey, "practise makes perfect", right? Remeber those hard 90s SNES platformers that were so punishing for every mistake you made? O.D.T carries exactly that amount of "hard" into the 3D platforming world. You'll be crying with joy at times upon seeing that red/green savepoint mark, trust me :) It's not a bad thing though! Yes, character navigation is clumsy, camera gets silly at times but that all just adds up to the right amount of challenge, which is far from rage-quiting (compared to some modern AAA games). Nostalgia for retro games is one thing but some 25-ish years later, it would be nice to see some resolution change options in the Menu as well as some pack-in digital goodies (artworks, manual, wallpapers, etc.). Overall a pleasant blast from the past :) A solid 7/10 from me.

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness

A bit of googling never hurt anybody...

It's an aged game and we live in an era, where people anticipate too much in every aspect of their lives. Was I expecting it to boot up under Win11 ? Not really. A bit of googling and there we go! It even worked with a fanmade translation patch from 2003 :) Back in the day, my PC was a budget homework PC so yeah...no DirektX orgies for me. Fast forward 20 years and here I go with my favorite Lara jump-turn-grab-pick adventure :) In my opinion, there are way too many tweaks in the Settings launcher to be fiddled with and you are not given any explanation what they mean or do or break if set up incorrectly. However, the game runs fine, supports FULLHD, GOG goodies are very nice, love the DRM-free Lara collection :)

Serious Sam's Bogus Detour

Kabooooom goes a suicidal alien :)

This game feels just so natural either on W,S,A,D + mouse and/or with a dual-stick gamepad. Such a nice "detour" from the classical FPS action where you get hit from all possible directions and never see it coming :) The pixaleted gore and number of breakable objects are nice-to-have features that I often found quite amusing. For those who seek an ocassional shmup with a pinch of DukeNukem-ish humor and wit, this might be just the one to pick up during a lunchbreak in your office :) (make sure the boss won't notice ^_^)
