Sometimes a games simplicity makes for a great game and this is the case with FTL. It is obviously inspired by Star Trek, so if your a Trekkie , this is for you. If you love this game, I should recommend the criminally ignored Crysing Sun, which has all of the elements of this game but takes it to a new level
The thing about the early MOH games is they had a cinematic feel to them and that same cinematics may of aged but it still feels personal. The only part that has aged badly is the mouse controls, sadly you can't use na controller and although using a mouse seemed fine at the time, it feels harder to get into these days. Overall still a great game regardless of the lack of controller support
I had high hopes for this game, I love BASS and this is certainly similar, I like Wadeye Games and I did enjoy this game but not as much as I expected. Let's start with the graphics they have a BASS Amiga look to them but after all these years, they just aren't as good as a 28 year old game designed for an Amiga, It also lacks the humour and I think I may of been hoping for something similar, the GUI system can sometimes be confusing. So is it a bad game , nom is it a great game, well thats also no. It's a good game but is quite wide of great
There are many excellent games out there and as a gamer since 1983 , I have played many but there are only a few legendary games and this is one of them. Its obviously inspired by the original Battlestar Galatica ( you can even add a BSG Mod) which is no bad things but it's its own story with amazing comic inspired cut scenes. It takes a bit to get used to with the controls seeming odd until you realise they are perfect for this type of game. It still looking amazing in the 21st century and then when you play the remastered versions , you realise just how amazing this game was and still is. If your looking for an absorbing story line set in space with amazingly beautiful graphics , this is it. Its up there with Half Life, Dungeon Keeper 2 , Syndicate , Fable, Company of Heroes etc as a game you will go back to.
I first played this game by accident back in the 1990's and due to it being a hospital simulator, it wouldn't of been in my disc drive normally but this is one of my favourite games of all time. I have chocked up 76 hours of play on GOG but the real figure is many many more hours as it's clever, funny and brilliant and it fits in my top 10 games of all time. I have looked at this game 20+ years on and wondered how it could be improved and yet I really don't think I would change it. Buy it if you like to laugh ( this game has illnesses like TV personality and bloated head disease) , you like Dungeon Keeper 2 ( and let's face it, if you've played it , then you are bound to love it) , you like Sim City, You like Bullfrog Games ( let's not forget the game the world Dungeon Keeper, Theme Park and Syndicate) or just because you love incredible games. Buy this game if you love any other type of game than FPS games ( you really won't appreciate this game).
I was unsure of this game in the beginning due to some of the reviews but I'm glad I gave it a go as it's a lot better than some of the reviews would imply. If your looking for quick action and more interested in the instant action of FPS games , this is not for you , it's a thinking story driven game. Have you ever wanted to work for the secret service piecing clues together then this is a bit like that , fascinating , intresting and at times a bit of a chore but still brilliant in its own right. If your a bit of a old bugger like me you may remember on the Spectrum that there was a game based on the Yes Prime Minster program where every choice had a response, either good or bad and you had to search for the next question and then the next answer, well this is the same. If you want action then this is not for you , if you want story and discovery , then this is for you.
I was bought this game when it first came out as a Christmas present and I thought it was going to be just another Age of Empires clone and thankfully I was very wrong. It has elements of AOE, what game of this type doesn't but this is just different enough to stand on it's own, in some ways I prefer it to AOE as it reflects history accurately and reflects historical events very rarely covered. It's well voiced, it's well written , it's well constructed, overall it's a pretty excellent strategy game and it doesn't get samey in the way AOE is as every level is different so you start every new level without knowing what to respect. If you like strategy games , you should own this along with Empire Total War and Stronghold.
I have a confession the last horror game I enjoyed was Resident Evil 2 and then I played Silent Hill which creeped me out and I haven't bothered since but this is just a bit special. I am a fan of point and click and this is exceptional , atmospheric , clever , interesting , great audio dialogue, I am struggling to find a fault. If you like Aliens, Event Horizon and enjoyed the concept of Dead Space ( this is point and click and not FPS ) you will love this. I'm going to hunt down the developers other games but it's a shame that GOG don't do scoring out of 10 as this would be a 9.
