Beautiful modern game in the retro coat and oldschool game mechanics! You'll learn how to drive pretty quickly. The rest is just taking a few races per day and enjoy this beauty. It really pushes hard on the nostalgia (played these games on my old Sony Ericsson phones). Set into the 80s it might also touch those who like relaxing synthwave music. Color palettes, car designs, menu... It's just as described. Unless you are into this, I don't think Slipstream has a lot to offer. It's great for casual gaming. After a dinner, you'd make a cup/glass of your favourite drink and play several races in this game. It's pretty simple, doesn't require anything to study, read super long dialogues, collect and equip items. You just sit and play, yet it feels that you actually play something (it's not static) while not being boring (like NFS). I don't mind if I win or lose, I just like to drive. Some races are simple while there are hard ones too. I see others criticize this title. I've had no issue with drifting (it's activation is equal to going turbo in the Crazy Taxi series). Note that this is fairly simple game from a small developer, so you basically get everything what's in the game description. I don't give 5 stars because I only think this game is still a bit pricey (at least to me, may differ due to the PPP if you live in different country). I am waiting for a sale and will get it, to me it's a super relax.
During all those years since this came out I've tried several times to get into the game. I like the way you progress through the story and so on. But overall... By the time I finish the first planet and start to do some missions I just don't see any point in playing further. Feels so boring to me... The gameplay itself, I don't like it. In general I enjoy these old games but this doesn't catch me at all. If it wasn't set into the Star Wars universe, didn't have Star Wars badge, lacked lightsabers, known faces and familiar voices and sounds? I don't think some would actually remembered it (but that's a common problem with Star Wars games in general). Played on ThinkPad with Windows 10, I don't think I noticed any major issues.
It's a pure RPG game, there is no action at all. A LOT of dialogues. It's like reading a book, but there is an added ability to move your character through the world and, to some extent, influence the way how the story would move on. It's a nice game with a nice story, just don't expect any excitement during the gameplay. The nice thing is that it indeed does fit into the Star Wars universe, not just paraziting on it like getting the brand. It does extend the story and is a good game on it's own. It also contains it's unique soundtrack, using just a few melody motives from the movies. There is a potential for replaying, as you can go through the story on two different paths (1st play you join alliance A whilie 2nd play you can go against them). Also racing and Pazaak minigames are nice. Runs great on my ThinkPad with Nvidia Graphics and latest Windows 10, but you'd better off saving the game quite often, as it crashes at like every 50th loading screen.
Talking about the basic game without any mods. Yeah, it is still quite appealing, it looks satisfying (at least to me). However, all this thing could offer is the Star Wars name on top of it. Provided it was called Spacerun: Conquer the Galaxy, had a different music and different models rather than Star Destroyers or Y-Wings, I don't think it would had been that popular. I find this game very repetitive. Gameplay feels a bit slow, not very responsive. Maybe it lacks some very special features, something spicy on top of an average RTS. Still could be playable. Might give a try to the mods other highlighted here! What I really dislike is the "mainstream aiming" with almost everything in this game. Rather than having an unique OST and just occassionally playing the original music, you'll get sick of hearing the same "SW pop music" over and over again. I also miss something original in the story, some new appealing units/characters. Or do you really believe that the Rebellion would be using R2D2 and C3PO for all secret missions? It is an unique game for sure, there is no other game like this. But I really think that once you put off the SW mask (which is indeed too much overwhelming here), not much is left. But I've felt it since it's release. Just need to repeat it every few years as I tend to remember this game better than it is:-)
I was always a bit into these games. Making a city, getting trade. Maybe some skirmish too but that's not the very important part. This one... It just felt way too complex but not in a way you would have expected. The broad aspect of this game is probably mainly the learning curve. I will be honest here: I've tried playing this game in past. My last attempt took me 1,5 hours. While that I finished two of the tutorial scenarios. Call me slow but I found the mechanics way too... slow too. Then I tried to play a quick free play game so only that I tried it all on myself (just the very basics). I just didn't feel very comfortable using the control panel. If you wanna sail, you have to achieve certain steps at first (buy a ship, hire a captain etc.), but somehow... Everything you buy/sell/hire etc. it feels that you have no control over it. You just buy something and then you don't know where it is, how to use it. I really felt like when I was playing OpenTTD, already progressed into a larger map with broad network of tracks and trains. At such stage the game was absolutely unmanageable, so it felt to me in PR2. Hard to control. Control buttons and the control mechanism is not the way I would have expected to be and behave. I usually don't care about graphics in 2000+ games once the game supports either satisfying resolution (say 900p and more) or widescreen option at 768p. This is not a case of PR2 too. I just can't recommend it. This game doesn't provide a good flow, there are better choices in this genre and even this style. PR1 seems to be a better option.
