Gord

A beautiful mess

Gord could've been an incredible game, but it's the usual - beautiful, full of potential and human creativity, but someone in the higher ups seems to have deprioritized "testing" and "polishing" again. This game hasn't been properly playtested and it shows. It starts off great and invites you in, but then makes you do chores. It's really just survival strategy as in "you collect resources to build things to collect more resources to build new things to collect new resources to build newer things". The gameplay is repetetive and bland, the choices don't feel fun and everything takes forever. I wanted to bathe in its rich atmosphere, but it's just a constant parade of "you're running out of x", "you need to build y", "do this random quest now or else", "villager z is getting attacked by a crocodile and doesn't know how to run away". It's tedious and frustratingly chaotic from one moment to another and while you're busy fighting off unpredictable spawns of hell your villagers start to get stuck in the floor, buildings sink into the ground and terrain collision becomes your greatest fear. Good luck fighting multiple fights on each end of the map simulatenously, or losing your whole fighter squad against 3 snakes because suddenly they're stronger than the others you just fought. It just doesn't make sense, it never feels coherent or fun if anything bad happens. I want to love this game, but wow did actually playing it ruin my mood. The cutscenes are beautiful though.
