Hogs of War

Smoke Some Pork!

So glad this is on GOG as it's one of my all time favourite games. Many have likened it to 3D Worms, which is a fair comment, but it is SO much better! Because you actually do start to care for your little piggy soldiers as they battle their way around Saustralasia, and you want them to improve through a fairly basic, but decent, skills tree. So that you end up with an elite fighting force. Gameplay keeps you gripped for hours on end as you use all manner of weapons on your opponents that are dropped in and picked up. You just want to complete the battle level you're on, and you don't mind doing it time and time again, because the game still retains the fun whilst doing so. The WW1 theme of it just adds to the experience. As do the slightly politically incorrect names and voice-overs done by the late Rik Mayall. His comedic talents are the cherry on top of an already great gaming cake. You'll constantly chuckle at the off-hand comments your pig soldiers make during turns, most of which are provided by Mr Mayall. It's a great testament to a great man. It proves that, sometimes, game companies can actually make the right decision on the voice talents they hire. This game is an example of how good that can be if done right. So, if you like turn-based games and you want something that's truly fun to play, then I urge you to buy this game. And one bit of advice - KEEP YOUR PIGGIES AWAY FROM THE WATER BECAUSE THEY CAN'T SWIM! Although try your best to get enemy pigs in there by blasting them into it...Heheheheh!

Space Pirates and Zombies

Pure mana for space game fans!

I've already got this game, but as soon as GOG had it, I just knew I had to buy it again to have on my GOG shelf. I'm just surprised that it took so long to get here. If you've played games like Conquest; Frontier Wars and liked it, then you'll love this one. In my own opinion, I think this is the better of the two. You don't think that at first, because you don't think there's much to it, but when you get under the hood of this game and figure out the tricks and tactics, you'll find yourself playing it for hours on end. Even when you just want to play it for an hour or so in the evening, you'll lose all track of time and you'll find that you've been on it for 8 straight hours with the light of dawn cracking through the window! And yes, that did happen to me once with this game, and that usually a good indicator of how good a game is. So if you are a space game fan, buy it, download it, install it, play it, and totally SPAZ out!

Shadowrun Returns

A Kickstarter King!

People who backed the game on kickstarter knew exactly what this game was going to be like and how it would play. These were the hardcore Shadowrun fans. Some of whom played the original pen and paper edition (y'know "real" RPG games) and I have to say that this is an excellent version and well worth the money. It ticks all the right boxes. Some have aimed the most pointless criticisms at it which I can only describe as a misunderstanding by these people as to what this game is. 1. Too linear? Nothing wrong with that. It is really the intro sample story for the game, after all. A story to get the player into the world of Shadowrun. The real cool stuff should come from those players who GM it and create their own stories to share with others. That's when the fun will really begin. 2. Poor graphics and no voice acting? You're joking right? There's nothing wrong with the graphics of this game. You don't need flashy AAA graphics to make a decent game and the lack of sound only helps those that want to GM their own campaign. 3. Inability to save at will? Saving a game wherever you like tends to destroy the gameplay of many a decent game, in my opinion. I find the savepoint system a welcome challenge, although they are usually loathed by the carebear player.

Great game - Shame about this DLC

Now, there's nothing wrong with the main game. It's a superb RPG game and players shouldn't think twice about buying it, but this DLC is asking a little too much. Those that say that it's worth it for the music alone should remember that GOG is a venue for games, not music downloads. The other content that it has just makes it look as if it all should have been included with the main game, which is where it belongs and not in a dubious DLC. I feel that should be corrected. It's only fair to those that have purchased the main game.

Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded

I could never understand the fuss

I never got into the Larry games like others did. When they were originally created, people bought them, copied them and handed them around like they were some kind of gaming porn, which I thought was the reason why they were so popular. I only bought this reboot when it was in the GOG summer sale, as I didn't want to pay full price for something that I wasn't sure about. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it now, as I would've felt really cheated if I had. I found the gameplay basic, the characters and animation sub-standard, the jokes cringingly corny, and if it wasn't for the fact that it could be clicked through, the narration plain annoying. Sorry if this upsets Larry fans, but there are far superior point and click games out there. I'll just leave this one to gather digital dust on my GOG shelf.
