As other reviews have said, opting not to have Neil and Eva as the playable characters is a step-down from previous games. It tries to build on the Neil and Eva narrative but because so much time is with other characters it doesn't quite reach the levels fans would hope. That said, for fans it's a must play, and for all others start out with To The Moon and if you become a fan then just play them all, you'll love them.
This was absolutely great in its time and it got me into westerns. It's worth a play-through if you haven't played it but after that the world becomes incredibly tiny, especially if you've already played Red Dead Redemption 1/2. Just go for Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2 if you're not sure.
A Bird Story is an enjoyable little interactive story experience which will particularly appeal to existing fans of To The Moon and not so much to newcomers. I highlysing recommend playing through To The Moon, it's a must experience game. Once you've done that, you'll find the appeal of the graphics, the story mechanics, the game engine quirks, the symbols that fans will recognize, the gorgeous music and amusing sounds, and all the that makes up a Free Bird Games experience. Must buy for big fans, buy on sale for casual fans, and play To The Moon before you buy for not yet fans.
GOG has dropped the ball on this release. As a long time GOG fan, I have become increasingly disappointed in GOG's "good old game" release quality in terms of stability, audio compatibility / quality, and input issues. The primary problem in this game is crashes. Secondary problems are things like sound and wonky mouse movements. Less important but still would be nice is enhanced resolution support. I am running Windows 7 64bit.
This is a brilliant game in every respect. It's worthy of a top spot in a top ten list of best games of all time any day of the week. Do yourself a favour. Buy a gamepad, play this at high resolution on your pc, and enjoy the amazing hybrid HD experience.
