TL;DR If you can go with the "poor" graphic style, you will enjoy a very rich colony simulation game. --- When I first saw the screenshots I tougth this was another cheap management simulation clone. After some time I convinced myself to try it and, boy, it was amazing! If you can indulge the spartan graphics, you will enjoy a very rich colony simulation where you have to tinker with a lot of aspects (from resource stocking, food production and even people wellness), you can (and probably need to) even micromanage them, by setting priorities and limitation on every resource and activity in the game. Apart from the random events generated by different AI can drastically change ansitustion, by bringing down a perfectly managed colony or boost a poor situation. I still didn't buy any DLC, but I'm sure they are worth it even if the base content gives you really a lot to tinker with.
