That people rate it at five stars is a travesty - they must enjoy the abysmal writing and lackluster story and come into this world to satisfy the need to explore it and shoot some teddy bears from their junk launchers. Don't get me wrong, I played and finished this game when it released and wandering the wastes can be an OK experience but cringe level gets off the charts more often then not. I would award a star or two for atmospheric and hard to navigate city ruins and music but other dev choices (post-apocalyptic vampires, Little Lamplight, DLC Operation Anchorage - hey, we can convert this game into a bad FPS, check it out, oh and enjoy a power armour even at the start of your game (same as F4); no logic nor reason whatsoever: everybody lives in shacks as if years haven't passed since the apocalypse, atomic explosions create a few seconds of radiation wheras water is irradiated forever; few quests and most of them mortifingly boring and stupid). To call this game Fallout is a slap to the face of all the fans of 1, 2 and even Tactics. Compare it with New Vegas and you will see how an RPG should be designed and written. Sadly people buy into this trend of dumbed down RPGs with SIMS-like Fallout 4 and a disaster of a game of Fallout 76. Luckily we have some oldies to play which are way better - and many of them done by the infamous Bethesda.
Best RPG ever, best DLCs ever as well (included) - so good it's hard to point the best (but probably Old World Blues for its sense of humour and nostalgia). Maybe the most modded game with the exception of Skyrim. Played it to death again and again. Main drawbacks being it's way too short :D, it doesn't take into account that the player will want to do everything in the world (which causes him/her to become to level up too powerful too fast unless you mod the game to slow levelling up). With the exception of the newest Wasteland (which is a completely different RPG) there isn't anything that molds itself around the player's decisions so deeply. Stop reading reviews, go play it! I suggest a boycott of Bethesda unless they let Obsidian dev New Vegas II.
While not being perfect it improves on many aspects of HR and has some fresh ideas which isn't that easy for a game with such a long history. We get new augs and a twist to their usage that they could have made even more extreme. The graphics are really great. The gameplay mechanics' changes are hit and miss, I would prefer it more old-school than the "route to cover" system. The story isn't the best and is cut short but it keeps you intrigued throughout. It could also use a bit more optimization. The AI is good. The music is just best ever for me. The shooting and the action as well. In the end we get an experience very true to both the first Deus Ex and HR which rewards exploration, walking off the beaten track and messing with own mechanics. I am very satified, just please.. give me MORE Deus Ex soon. How about a remake of the old ones? And people, please - stop complaining on companies being greedy (yeah, that's new) and buy this game, especially at this laughable price - and you will see its way better than Cyberpunk.
The more I played the less I enjoyed it. And boy did I want to like it. Sadly, it's an okay FPS and a medicore RPG with a story that while starting off quite intriguing gets really boooring as it closes to its climax and you even shouldn't put it on the same shelf as New Vegas. The NPCs are mosty well done and likeable, and the shooting is fine. The graphics are okay but the shaders settings are truly horrible - do yourself a favour and download some mod to fix it, for me it was unplayable otherwise. While not terrible I expected much more from this title and most of all from Obisidian. Highly unreplayable for me as well, maybe with DLCs at a later date.
I'm shocked to see all the negative reviews. This game isn't perfect but it tries doing things quite differently and for me most of it works really well. It also feels more in tune with the original X-COM than the new reboots. Remeber the music to X-COM? Minimalistic and ambient score it featured? Guess what, the same happens here - and it builds the atmosphere of tension brilliantly. The qraphics have really intriguing aesthetics with some hit and miss models, especially the highest tier monsters but they all look scary and dangerous. Especially the armours of the soldiers are really impressive. OK the stamina mechanics is irritating but it is there to make you unable to respond to all threats - and it makes sense, too. It also has a little bit of feeling a bit indie - and not wholly in a good way. It features a long and complex campaing with many side-stories with missions and multiple results. Highly replayable, many different approaches are viable, albeit some work better than others. A bit slow and can get repetitive - but also it also suck you in and hours can fly by with "just one more.." Generally I would score it with a solid 4 but it gets a 5 to get some more love it definitely deserves. In my opionion a must-have for all 1994 X-COM fans.
