Darklands

Sooo good, but SOOOOO buggy

i played this heavily back in the day. It had epic visuals, phenomenal play value, but was buggy as hell. It is impossible to save in underground areas, which often take more than an hour to complete, and as often as not the game would crash at some point after 30 minutes+ in an underground mission. The watercolor graphics have stuck in my head to this day (20 years later), and i've always thought it to be one of the most beautiful games of its time. Just don't venture underground if you can avoid it, because you can't save there and it will likely crash on you.

Fantasy Wars

Excellent game overall, but...

even when using cheat codes, this game is annoyingly difficult.

Master of Orion 3

Stick with MOO2.

Moo2 is the only old DOS game i still play (since 15 years). When Moo3 came out i was hyped, excited, and ready to play (back when it was released). But that enjoyment drained quickly after installing it. The UI is literally painfully clunky, the game takes many hours before you can get to a point of seeing any other races (only to see that they've expanded 5-10x faster than you), and it's just plain tedious. The only thing i liked about MOO3 was the space battles, but they're not worth sitting through the rest of it.
