Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration

Only for true nostalgia addicts

TL;DR if you really want to play any of the included games (check the list to make sure your old favorite is included) then it will be worth it (although you are probably already emulating them). Do not buy expecting to discover a new game that you might like, these games have NOT aged well. I bought this for 2 games only: Tempest 2000 and Cybermorph, which were some of my favorite games on the Jaguar. I still love them to this day, and will play them regularly, now and again. I play them on an emulator (there is Virtual Jaguar, and also a Russian emulator called Phoenix that emulates the Jag and a 3DO, go figure). I bought this for my Nintendo Switch, I'm waiting for the game to go on sale before I double-dip and buy it on GOG. As for the rest of the games, I've looked at a bunch, and my reaction is always the same: why would anybody today play such an ugly, blocky game with primitive gameplay? LOL I guess anybody could say the same thing about Tempest 2000 and Cybermorph, but hey, I have have real nostalgia for those games, and nothing you can say about them will change my mind. Don't buy this expecting your grandkid will be interested in the "origins of video games." Who has time to play such old, blocky games? And nobody is going to scroll through the "history lessons" included, people would probably rather watch a YouTube video or a TikTok. The other major criticism I have is with the game selection...where are some of the other games I really would have liked to have seen in a collection such as this? Leaving aside the Jaguar, I also had a Lynx, and I could easily think of many games that I would have liked to have seen. Why are so many games that I liked missing? (BTW, the Lynx collection is paltry and the titles are, uh, not the best. Honestly, the included Lynx titles are pretty awful...) To summarize, if you have an old fond memory of one or more of these games and you have the money, go for it! Otherwise, avoid.

Ghost of a Tale

I'm so happy I bought this

I'll keep the review short: This is a delightful, top-notch game. Think of the book "Redwall" meets the game "Thief" + maybe "Skyrim" or the "Witcher 3" or heck, even "Deus Ex". You play as a mouse, Tilo, who has to escape the prison run by the Rat King, in order to then go on to rescue your wife, Merra. The Rats are big, strong, and powerful, so the emphasis is on stealth and exploration (hence the comparison to "Thief" or even "Deus Ex", games where stealth played a huge role). There is also quite a bit of lore and wonderful description in the game (sort of like "Skyrim") and some genuinely interesting and humorous interactions with NPC's (ok, not like "Skyrim," where you pretty much travelled places and wound up just killing the NPC's no matter what...but reading the journals and letters were fun!). If you are like me, you've bought a huge number of games, and then barely play most of them, and/or start a game, but get bogged down, something pulls you away and you can't bring yourself to start over again. This game has me hooked...I keep coming back for more, I love the exploration aspect and I don't mind backtracking over areas I previously explored. The game is that fun! I will also mention, the graphics are top-notch! Hard to believe this was the work of primarily one person. The music and audio are fantastic, too. My only wish was that it was a bit easier to play with keyboard and mouse, but honestly, the Xbox joypad is perfect, I just had to dig it out from the bottom of a drawer.
