Even today it still holds up with ideas and concepts that for some unfathomable reason where discarded such as a diplomacy system that allows you to decline diplomacy if you're in the middle of something, or espionage where you can conduct an operation, then leave evidence implicating another faction and provoking two enemies into war, or breaking their alliance. It's a game where you can concievably win the game having never fired a shot in anger, you do have to defend against mindworms but you can just bribe your enemie's units on the battlefield. It also has a thoughtful, intelligent story and quotes that have stood the test of time such as the manipulative outro when you try to quit a game - "Please don't go, the Drones need you, they look up to you" guilt tripping you into a few more hours play. Buy it, play it, you won't be sorry because this is a masterclass in game development and sadly demonstrates how the art is being lost.
