This is a pretty good version of the "open world survival crafting" genre re-hash that's been going on for the last decade. But it's still an "open world survival crafting" re-hash. If you like that style of game I'm sure you'll love this. Also the reason I gave it 4 instead of 3 stars is because most of the annoying mechanics can be tweaked or disabled in options.
The game literally crashes every time I close it and I have to force a shutdown with task manager. The gameplay doesn't feel good or fair; and while the plot is interesting it's not enough to make up for it. This is one of those games that I would sooner reccomend people watch a let's play of it than actually play. If you're a hardcore fan for the battletech universe then you MAY be able to look over some of the issues but for an average joe like me it's just a crappy tactics game with an ok plot slapped on top.
Why is this so highly rated? This is just a sub-par platformer with a pretentious atmosphere. I can tell it's desperately trying to make me feel something, but honestly it's just making me confused. I understand the plot twist/revelation at the end but... why? This feels like it was written by a highschool student trying really hard to be "deep." If the gameplay was good I could forgive this but honestly it's so "meh" that it's forgettable. I didn't even pay for this game, I got it in a humble bundle and I'm still kind of mad at it simply for wasting my time. Don't get this game unless you're the type of person that pretends to like abstract art.
The game itself is actually ratehr good. Gameplay, music, graphics, artsyle, story, it's all there. However it crashes at start up half the time, and has frequent bugs and glitches that sometimes require you to replay long segments of gameplay. This is an especially egreguis problem considering the game has already been out on the EPIC store for over a year. I could understand if this was a beta but put simply it's unnaceptable to ask $60 for a broken game that is most likely never going to be fixed.
The game has multiple issues, the worst of which is the semi-frequent crashing. Through the course of the game it crashed to desktop at least 5 times. If that wasn't enough there are some severe frame-rate drops throughout. That being said, the gun-play IS rather fun in the main game, even if the skyhook feels lackluster and the "vigors" feel tacked on. To be blunt the story kind of sucks. It pays homage to being deep, but feels stapled together by a highschooler who just finished AP physics and thinks he's the next Orson Scott Card. The DLC "Burial at Sea" attempted to fix the problems above, but in my oppinion failed miserably. At the time of release Bioshock Infinite faced some major criticisms from fans and the DLC feels like the devs scrambled it together as some kind of apology. The game-play in the first half gives you the ability to carry more than 2 guns, however it cuts down on how much ammo you can carry, forcing you to cycle through weapons more often. The second half takes a much more stealthy approach: taking away your shields, giving you a crossbow with special bolts and a plasmid/vigor that allows you to go invisible and see enemies through walls. However the ammo restrictions are even worse. While I would say that the game-play in the DLC is more reminiscent of classic Bioshock, I wouldn’t necessarily call it “better.” As for the story of the DLC, well it’s a spoiler ridden mess that attempts to ensure you that the plot is in fact interesting and there are so many intricate webs that were woven into it, even though it actually undercuts some core themes of the original plot. Again, it feels like it was written by an egotistical highschooler. Overall, should YOU buy this game? I would say no, at least not unless it’s on sale for very cheap. And try not to take it as seriously as it takes itself.
The game is still worth playing in my opinion, but has aged poorly. Graphically I would say that it still mostly holds up, or and there are several mods that update several models and textures if that's your thing. However, the mouse is CRAZY fast in menus, the AI is definitely early 2000s level, and the game frequently crashes on loading screens. If you can look past these issues then I would say you should get it. It's a steal at $10 and if you get it on sale then I'd definitely say it's worth it. I give it a rating of slightly stale cheese out ten.
Let me be clear first off, gameplay wise this game is completely fine. It's not amazing, but it's ok. There are some issues with objects not interacting with eachother, but it's nothing that you can't deal with. If you're looking for a game with graphics reminiscent of katamari damacy and some stupid fun this may be your cup of tea. So that's the good, now to the bad The "plot" if you could call it that is lackluster and pretentious. All you do is run around and press X to listen to the “Thoughts” of different objects in the game. After gaining some abilities you start to stumble upon to different “Thoughts” Which are audio excerpts from different Alan Watts lectures. The problem with this is that (at least in my opinion.) Alan’s philosophies are shallow and filled with holes. It all sounds like the ramblings of a college student who just smoked half a pound of weed. “Duuude, like we ARE the universe, and the universe is us. And if you don’t get it it’s cause you aren’t enlightened enough.” It brought me out of out of the gameplay, which was immersive enough on it’s own. Finally I just muted the audio clips and played the game in silence. While there is a series of events where you can go into a little sub-dimension and there is an actually interesting pseudo plot to that. It is overshadowed by the hamfisted attempt at being 2deep4u. That being said however. If you are a hippie, smoke copious ammounts of weed, or are desperate to find some pseudo-scientific semi-buddhist meaning in your life. I would give this a 5 star rating FOR YOU. If you aren’t any of those three things, then I’d give it 3 stars, and tell you to listen to a podcast or audiobook while you play with the game muted.
