This is one of the most compelling universes I have ever experienced in any piece of media. The main story is, in my opinion, secondary to the world in which is unfolds. That being said, fighting the same enemies over and over when you are searching for a certain area is not fun, and boss fights suck ass to the point that it made me rage-uninstall multiple times. The developers foresaw this and added cheat options such as increasing the rate at which you recover energy, the damage you receive, etc. I did the main story, some side missions, and did a couple of missions of the first DLC, but I just can't deal with the combat anymore.
Combat is heavily reliant on timing. The last 1/3 of the game is in an area with rain and many other effects that make the frame rate drop significantly (not that it was much stable the rest of the game). In this same area, a new enemy is introduced that requires extra timing and reflexes. If you are going to to threaten the player with "fail too many times and you will lose your progress" you better deliver on the whole combat experience.
It's one of those "if you played it during it's time, you'll want to play it now, otherwise it's outdated" A personal note: the menu is f'ed up, the the game itself works fine, you might have to fiddle with the "aditional executables".
This is what I think a true terror game should be. No gore, no cheap jump scares. Just imagery and anticipation and good pay offs. Another thing I really enjoyed was the "conversation mechanic". The characters I really well built, which makes the choosing that much more interesting and immersive. People keep complaining about lack os game mechanics, which is baffling to me. From the start its pretty clear that this isn't Diablo or anything like that. I guess "isometric walking simulator" is the best way to describe this.
