Amnesia: Rebirth

it's pretty good

i really enjoyed my time with it. the plot, pacing and lore (especially because it's tied in with the dark descent) are great. people online are talking about 'jumpscares' but that's really not a thing. it's a mechanic (that has since been toned down) that flashes the screen when your sanity is low, or during 'death' scenes. It happened to me so rarely that it's really not bad at all. the only thing that did bother me though, is the at times ridiculous and annoying overreliance on enemies. be they chase sequences (not as bad) or stealth sections, they were quite detrimental to the gradual errosion of my immersion / suspension of disbelief: when you 'die' to an enemy and have to retry a section in *any* horror game, all the tension is gone because now you've seen the enemy, and it's not about not knowing what's going on and being scared (which this game pulls of quite well before you die) anymore. Instead, it's now about beating ai with shitty passive stealth that makes you hide and stare holes into the air while you wait for it to pass, only to then be one pixel off it's fov and fail anyways. Every subsequent failure to be in the right place at the right time pulls you further out of the game and just ends in frustration. Frictional seem to know that this style of stealth in horror games is outdated and sucks, Since they introduced an no-enemy mode to soma after a while but for some reason didn't bring it back for rebirth. Instead, in 9/10 times when you die to an enemy you respawn but the enemy is gone. This isn't the greatest solution because it ended in me just yeeting myself into enemies so i can die and explore in peace. BUT There is some times where the enemy doesn't dissapear because the game wants you to do *one very specific thing* to progress, so you are deadlocked in some parts of the game until you deal with the enemy. all in all i still enjoyed it greatly though and if they add a no-enemy mode like in soma it's gonna be a 5/5 for me.
