LIMBO

In praise of small games.

I like big-ass games. I like open-world, and career mode games. I like the sense of mastery and ownership that comes when you put 100 + hours into a game world. I like mythology and deep lore and surprising mechanics. I love good voice acting and jaw-dropping graphics. Limbo is not that, and it's the better for it. It's short, sharp, focused. No voicing, minimalist graphics and sound, only mechanics are move, jump, and interact. The story is "find your sister". That's it, that's all, and that's all it needs. This is a truly brilliant piece of minimalist art and game design. And sorry GOG, but Limbo and it's follow-up Inside are 90% off on that other gaming platform right now. For the price of a cup of coffee, pick up two of the greatest indie platformers ever. You will thank me.

Wreckfest

Oh HELL YEAH!

This game hits the sweet spot between technical driving games and arcade smash-em-ups. The driving and damage physics are amazing. The customizability and tuning is just enough. The graphics look good and smooth, even on my semi-potato laptop. This isn't just destruction derby (until it is), it's short track dirt racing, and time trials, and a very easy build-yer-own race creator. I've seen no bugs or real glitches. The UI could be better. Turn off the in-game music. It sucks balls, and covers up the well-done sounds of tires, gears, screaming engines, and sand. Call it half-way between Forza and Flatout. Part technical racer, part smash-mouth "I SAID get out of my way!" Completely recommended, if this kind of game is your kind of thing. Bonus points, it work perfectly on my new Steam Deck.

Attentat 1942

The best not-game of the year.

This is an amazing, important experience. Meticulous research, moving and authentic. This isn't a game so much as a choice driven interactive history class. Your choices do matter, but they are mainly moral or practical choices (like where to hide the letters from the Gestapo). It's absolutely packed with real history, the full motion video is heartbreaking and beautiful, It's a treasure box that will take at least one more time to unpack. And it doesn't overstay it's welcome. This might be my favorite GOG purchase of the year, it's good enough that I'm buying it for my best friend. Not graphically demanding, runs on my potato, but the graphics are very well done, and some of the fmv is heartbreakingly good. The audio is crisp and clean, voices are mainly Czech, excellent subtitles. Controls are about as easy as it gets. Not sure about age appropriateness. It's honest, which makes it brutal at times. I'd probably give it to a smart 12 year old, and talk to them after. Seriously, it's been years since a game moved me like this.

Arcade Paradise

3.5 (4.5 with a better patch)

This game has seeds of greatness, and even in it's currently almost beta state, I have been having hours of addictive fun. There is, for me, something zen-like in doing the laundromat tasks, and the arcade games you can get can be pretty brilliant. (and some can be pretty horrible half-baked messes) It's grabbed more of my time than any other game the past two weeks. It needs more work. I wish the devs would give GOG a bit more love. There are more patches in the works, and they are obviously planning to add DLC's. I'm not sorry I bought it day one. I like what it's trying to do. And, it's getting there. The first patch was a huge improvement. The next patch, and first DLC should make it even better. It's just innocent, charming, challenging, well-done (mainly) fun. And it's gonna get better.

GRIP

Very good, not great, worth four dollars

I never would of thought of this game if not for the deep sale, but it's really good! Plays smooth and looks great on my modest rig (Win 11/Ryzen 7/Radeon Vega X/ 12 G/Logitech controller). There's not a lot of story here, physics are arcade-y, and car customization is pretty shallow. This ain't Forza or F-1 or Rally. Combat is also pretty basic(not Carmageddon or Twisted Metal, either). And yet? It's also hella fun. Instantly able to pick up and play, with a deep bag of tricks that will take time to master. Graphics that are sharp, pleasant, and bright without being overwhelming (and without overheating my laptop). Perfect for either single or couch two-person. Works brilliantly with a controller. Many hours of fast-paced, simple-minded fun here to be had. I would have been pissed about paying full price for this game, but for $4 USD it's a steal, and belongs in every drivers library.

Tropico 5: Complete Collection

Why the hate? It's a good game.

First, it runs fine on Win 11 and a 5 year-old low end laptop. 40 hours in, no game breakers or show stoppers. Some annoyances (AI and camera, mainly). Second, Trop 4 or 5? 4 is smarter, uglier, and more fiddle-fucky (some would say deeper). 5 is a prettier, more streamlined, (some would say shallower) experience. And the AI DOES get wonky sometimes. The controls ae better. The UI is VASTLY better. It is a really good game, that deservers no hate, even if it also deserves no top-ten lists. I'd have no problem recommending this as a first RTS building game. But full price for a game this old is ridiculous. I got it for $7.00 (80%) off, and was well satisfied. So, wait for a sale, yes. But this game does NOT deserve one star reviews. That's just silly.

Vodka infused Pop-Tarts...YUM!

I'm not usually a puzzle gamer, but this tiny gem won my heart. It's pretty, it runs on a potato, it has a unique mechanic, and it's FUN! It is also completely appropriate for younger players (or older gamers who want a break from dystopias, graphic violence, and zombies). Let me get the negatives out of the way. Cons: -It's short. About four hours for a normal playthrough, maybe double that for a completionist. -It's designed for a controller. If you are a K+M purist, you'll hate it. The keyboard controls suck. -No voice acting. This is a big disappointment since Double Fine games usually have excellent voicing. -It's easy. Like...REALLY easy. Even for a non-puzzler like me, the first solution is usually blazingly obvious. The three-tier hint system means you've basically got a walkthrough at your side if you choose to abuse it. Now the goods: +Unique. I've never seen a basic game mechanic like this, and it works brilliantly. +Charm. I'm an old fart who doesn't like cute. Most JRPG's creep me out. This one hooked me quick and hard. The animation, the writing, the dark but not doomy storyline. This made me feel good while I played. +Graphics. This will run on a potato, but still looks gorgeous and runs smooth. When you consider that ever character is an inanimate version of a Russian doll, the variety and liveliness +Writing. While I'm disappointed this wasn't voiced, the writing is up to snuff. I found myself laughing out loud, getting a little weepy, and pondering some big questions. +Multiple solutions (that make sense). Do you want to get that guard away from the door by slapping him, seducing him with a sex doll, or farting into an air vent to drive him away? Just delightful paths to the solution. +Sound. No voicing, but sound and music are beautiful and immersive. +Non-violence. I have no problem with violent or sexy games. But sometimes it's really nice to play a game where the most extreme act is a slap or a fart. A small delight, worth your coin.

Blade Runner - Enhanced Edition

Doesn't quite deserve the hate

The good: I can now play on the couch with a gamepad and my 35" TV. The bad: Pretty much everything else. This games history and licensing is even more convoluted than NOLF. And the Nightdive skin isn't quite horrible. It does allow for couch-play, if nothing else. UI is more functional, but uglier. Weird audio glitches. Graphics are a mixed bag. Some better, some not. If you own the SCUMMVM 2019 version, there is no reason to upgrade, except if you crave couch-play. If you don't? What's WRONG with you?
