This game features a lot of unnecessary running around and backtrack, it's way too stretched out and at some point you'll have to wait for a tedious and slow companion to follow you exactly to the doors of every segment (and there's plenty of those) otherwise they will not show up in the next room, apartment section is great and overall premise is interesting but it's very poorily executed. It really makes you wonder if they made it annoying on purpose.
VTMB has the best atmosphere in games like it, the city streets are all unique and a breath of fresh air (I really liked Hollywood), it's almost hard to believe this is running on the same engine that Half-Life 2 is on, the dialogue is also really well written, which is always a plus. Only thing that kind of bugged me was the janky combat and the balancing for it, especially in the late game, which gets you killed if you forget to bring lots of supplies, the skill tree is a deciding factor if you live or die and you have to choose a class to use most of the time and stick with it (Guns, Melee or your special abilities) otherwise you'll be weak in the late game. It's also still quite buggy but most bugs can be fixed easily using the console or in the case of the AI pathing bug, you just have to remove all .ain files from /maps/graphs to fix this.
This version is broken and missing essential fixes. For example, I've encountered the game breaking bug that straight up lowers my average FPS every few minutes until I'm on sub 20 FPS. It's apparently because of some device drivers (Like for Logitech, which I don't even use). Buyer beware.
These last few weeks I've been enjoying MGSPW and MGS4 on PS3. Luckily for me, MGS1 and MGS2 were released on GOG, I've bought both of them and being the second time beating MGS2, I can say this PC Port is quite good. Only problems I've found are: 1. Enabling any kind of MSAA makes the faces in cinematics look really bad. 2. Disabling Motion Blur in the Settings disables some shadows/effects and makes the game look worse overall. Control-wise, believe it or not, I've managed to beat it with M&K Controls, for people doing the same blasphemous acts, make sure you set the second button for L2 and Crawl controls to something closer to your hand, since the last boss requires the use of your mouse for practically the entirety of the fight.
This game is outright amazing, I've been playing MGS2, MGSPW and MGS4 as of lately and I've never played MGS1, so far the port was pretty decent. Except that If I've been Alt Tabbed for a while, the main menu has these weird lines everywhere, and also, The FMV Subs don't work. Except for that, great port, and also, don't forget to disable the "Aspect Ratio Correction" in the DirectX Config so that the game can take up the entire screen.
