Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Dodge simulator

Many very cool ideas. Characters, enemies, environments, RPG elements, all fantastic. The battles don't rely on tactics. Learning the fine points of the character abilites doesn't really matter. Everything is a distant second to dodge, parry, jump, or one of the other quick time button presses when receiving an attack. If you love quick time events, if the most fun thing about a game is dodging and not attacking, then this game was made for you. I don't like any of that. Everything, *everything* in the game is overshadowed by the fact that the most important thing is pressing the right button at the right time when attacked. Some of the chromatic boss battels are only this and nothing else. Press the right dodge and parry buttons repeatedly for more than 10 minutes. A very good game is hiding under this dodge button simulator. I'm increasingly having a hard time to want to continue playing it after 30 hours.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Low frame rates prevent finishing.

Got about 5 hours into game and can't continue. Reached a room where frame rates dropped to 5 fps when facing out into the room. Now there's a jump that I can't make at this frame rate so I can't continue. Played on Asus ROG Strix laptop with AMD RX 6800M. Then installed on desktop with RTX 3090 but the game wouldn't load past the first screen. Both Windows 11. Spent an hour searching Google, changing settings, and installing on another machine. Cut my losses and gave up. Was ok while it lasted, but not worth more hassle. Played every TR game on their original consoles at release - playing this was nostalgic but was a bit more dated than I'd remembered. Not nearly as replayable as some other games from the same year like Gears of War or Halo 3.
