Get the upscale texture patch - not the model replacer - and the environment upscale, and the player's patch. It's a perfectly fluid experience that holds up years later. SS2 came out when I had just turned 1, and I just beat it for the first time.
Great until act 5 crusade mode. Even with the toybox mod it takes literal hours of "skip day" to build up your armies and skip through the crusade battles. Just an obnoxious waste of time.
