Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate

Amazing game for the right person

Essentially what you're getting here is something similar to X-Com, set in the Warhammer 40k universe and with a few new interesting features. This might not sound like anything spectacular, but in practice it is very interesting. Trees and bushes can be swept away with Agent Orange-like defoliant grenades, flamers (flamethrowers) can be used to block an enemy's path for a team or clear away organic matter, you can fully customize almost every aspect of the squads under your command including all of their equipment, you can destroy parts of the terrain and some objects and missed shots can hit a bystander or cause damage to the world. The game has virtually no storyline whatsoever and nothing is explained. Therefore, if you don't have some knowledge of 40k it may seem bizarre and confusing. Even if you are a veteran of the Dawn of War franchise you will have trouble adapting to this game if you haven't already put a decent number of hours into "hardcore" turned-based titles. I've spent hundreds of hours in Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 and it still took me a hop, skip and a jump to get the hang of this game. Once you do get the hang of it though it's a great experience. It is interesting to assume the role of an Ultramarines company and see the practicality of warfare in that capacity. Any of your space marines can die at any time and once they're dead they're dead forever. This means that you have to plan your actions carefully and develop a set of tactics to use in different situations. The fact that you also have several types of vehicles at your disposal also throws a new twist on things. To this day there is no game that's even similar to this, except maybe Mechanicus.
