Many of the reviews here expect Ulima IX to be.. well, the game after Ultima VIII. That's okay, but you won't be happy that way. But if you have never played an Ultima before, and love RPGs, this is still a gem. Most crashes can be avoided by using a different configuration (google "Forgotten World: Settings Changes To Improve Ultima 9′s Performance (And Reduce Crashing)" ) and after that,, it's really enjoyable.
