CivCity: Rome

Decent city builder, tech problems

First, the game by itself is quite decent city builder with elements of researching of technologies and upgrades. If you enjoy Caesar series, this experience is pretty similar. I had some fine moments with this game back in the day. However I tried to replay it some years later and found out that it lacked any kind of widescreen support. The game engine is built for 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions and though you can edit resolution settings in the config files, the playability gets screwed, because all the mouse coordinates on the screen get off, and you have a hard time clicking on the right spot. Come-on.. 2006 when the game was released, aspect ratios 16:9 and 16:10 were pretty common with monitors. That said its a decent city builder if you have a 4:3 monitor or you don't mind playing it stretched. The issue was never addressed as far as I know.

Pirates! Gold Plus

Arrrrrrrrrrr!

I could not possibly count the hours spent on these titles ! Pulling all-nighters crossing the Spanish Main, plundering gold from both enemies and friends alike, finding lost relatives, and collecting grand treasuries. You are a pirate/privateer on service of one of the great nations of the time (England, Spain, Portugal or Netherlands) or just in service of your own. Nations wage war and as a privateer you are allowed to attack and plunder enemy ships. Or you can attack everybody, but pissing everybody off is generally not a good idea, since getting fresh crew will become a bit difficult. In the course of your daring exploits you will come across maps of grand treasures, lost relatives and all kind of stuff to make the game the grand entertainment it actually is. :) "Fly our flag, we teach them fear Capture them, the end is near Firing guns, they shall burn Surrender or fight, there is no return Under Jolly Roger !!!" ;)

Heroes of Annihilated Empires

Nice and underrated game.

A very nice RTS with very nice graphics, awesome story though unfinished as the game was planned to be a trilogy. Vast armies, fantasy setting with sci-fi hints, RPG elements. A very nice cross-breed which is worth some attention.

Quest for Glory 1-5

A hero is wanted

One of the best mixes of poind-and-click adventure and RPG. Different player classes and different ways of solving situations. RPG-like stats, with combat and beautiful story and amazing characters. Will give 4 stars only because of the 5-th installment. nobody needed the 3D at the time ;)

Broken Sword 4: The Angel of Death (2006)

A solid sequel

A refreshingly good sequel after the disappointing third episode. Good plot with very nice twists and turns. Giving 4 star only because of the mini-games which I generally dislike to be put in this genre.

Darklands

One of the best RPGs of my childhood

As stated in the title, this is one of the best and most complex RPG titles I have ever played. You got an open-world game set in medieval Germany. Party of four people to battle evil, and tons of things you need to take care of. Unlike most RPGs where people just give you money and your character is some godlike being that needs no food or rest. You have to take care for your livelihood, pray to saints for aid and many more details. A true gem from the times where computer resources were low, but developers and designers compensated with ideas and brilliant gameplay.
