Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition

Casual Turn based RPG player's view

I can see people giving 5 stars and I can see the game selected as GOTY on many sites. I have no problem beleiving, that this game is better than other games this year from all genres. But for me, it doesn't mean, that this game is absolutely awesome above very great games. No, it means, that the competition from all genres were mediocre at best, and this game is above medicore. So why am I not giving 5 stars but only 3? Well, I'd love to give 3 1/5, but that's not an option on this site. It's almost hitting 4 stars, but definetely not 5. Let's see the positives: 1. Great atmosphere. There is a lot, i mean A LOT to do and whether or not the player is gonna do everything or not, it depends how long can someone fiddle around on an area. Despite some people claiming, that it can be difficult, there are some redudant side missions here, that actually won't really raise nor give any significant loot, especially if you happen to stumble upon a mission, that has 1 or 2 level lower opponents. 2. Great graphics and sound. While the birds eye view camera may not be everyone's cup of tea, the environment is drawn beautifully and the music is top notch, along with special effects and sound effects. 3. Great depth of gameplay. As I mentioned already, there is plenty to do, and nearly infinite combinations of gear and mixture of skills to be learned, as well as party selection and party training. The game can be also very long, depending how far the gamer will go to try and check everything. Ok, so here comes the reasons for 3.5 score: 1. Inventory/loot/equipment management. I can't think of a game, that I spent at least 50-60% of my time fiddling with my gear and equipment. It's now. literally 5 minutes travel -> find a book or a gear -> 15 min. switching gear, switching spells, identifying, selling, buying, dropping, adding, mixing, combining, cooking, expermineting, repairing compairing. It totally pulls the hault on the gameplay. And I ran out of characters to write m

No Man's Sky

It's a space pic app

Ritually started a new game in NMS after every patch, since pratically every patch broke my savegame in a certain way since my original save since release. Whether my base was covered in grass or my base suddenly was missing crucial items didn't exist before, doesn't matter. So I started a new playthrough. Unfortunately it's a long grind to get up running, with all the back and forth flying and spend 70% of the time staring at my inventory what to throw away, because of the limited space, while everything is needed. I give it 3 stars from my original 2 stars previously, because if you like to take pictures of various graphical effects on different planets, then it's great. Other than that, the game offers little depth. Let's just say this... The first 3 hours of your gameplay- whatever you were doing- is what you gonna be doing for eternity. Waiting for something awesome isn't happening here.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Best ARPG in years

I have all 3 of them now, and Witcher 3 is the best of the bunch, with Witcher 1 as 2nd. For some reason, I didn't enjoy W 2 as much, perhaps there was a great deal of lacking the hardware requirements at the time, but I did manage to put in at least 30 hours. For Witcher 3 - I'm beyond 70hrs already and I'm far from finishing it. I can't give 5 stars though and some may find, my criticism is just a certain point of view, or somehow the positives overshadow the negatives. I go with the negatives first: 1. Camera angle is something I'm not so found of, whether it's Witcher 1, 2 or 3. I'm just not fan of the over-the-shoulder camera, which could also become a nuisance in tight places and certain positions. 2. Picking up items can be annoying as well, sometimes the highlight (E) just doesn't want to work. 3. Inventory management can be a chore. Having only 2 potions hotkeyed is just as well annoying. Especially, if I have to go through 3 menu screens to equip something else. Crafting and figuring out what can be used as an upgrade can be also overwhelming and there are plenty of redundant stuff and nit-picking has to be done, before a single potion or an equipment can be created. The novelty wears off after the 10th sword or armor crafted. There are also some glitches and bugs regarding movement and function, which I won't go in, due to limited space for this review. Beside those points, everything else is a big positive, especially the amount of interesting missions with narratives and good rewards.

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident

Underrated Gem

As the title, first I didn't buy it for a while. Then I got it and took some time to learn the controls (there is a nice tutorial from start off) and I got hooked. This game is a hidden gem, that nobody bothered to play. Controlling your space corvette/capital ship is an absolute blast. You get all sorts of weaponry and you will have plenty of spaceships on your side. It also becomes an RTS to a certain degree later on the game, issuing commands to other capital ships or even taking over control completely. If you haven't played this game, but you describe yourself someone who is at least midly interested in space combat or even real time strategy, then you should definitely try it. If you think, that capital ship battles with giant lasers and mortars is in a short order today, this is your game. A small note here: there were gonna make a sequel with groundbreaking graphics, back in 2010 I beleive. The game never materialized, due to shortage of funds and it's a terrible ending from any angle. You can look up their trailer on youtube what a fantastic game it could have been. Starflight™ 1+2

It made me learn English under 2 years

I wanted to play this game so bad, back in 1994, when I first got my hand on a computer, that I actually set beside my computer playing this, with a dictionary open on my desk. Just think about it. I still can't find an equalent only poor imitations, even though today's technology could surely provide all the necessary codes to see this game in a 3D world with amazing galaxies and planets!

Enemy Engaged: Comanche vs Hokum

Theater of War simulation at its best

There are few far between games, that actually simulates an ever evolving battlefield, like this game. Just think about it..while you idle at your base or flying somewhere to complete your mission, the war is waging on and the borderlines change. You can actually feel that, your simple little mission of taking out a particular target makes a difference. You may get called during the flight to help out some armor and you can choose to ignore it or get on with it. Either way, you are contributing to the winning or loosing, but not definitely loosing the game, since it doesn't only depend on you, of course. Your actions matter, but you aren't the protagonist, just another combat pilot, and the game does a hell of a good job simulating that role! If you are into combat sims, you definitely should try this game!
