I started playing it hoping to have a turn based strategy civ like game, however for me the "social" aspect is overwhelming and distracts me too much from building up my nation. Your court gets pretty big and crowded - a lot of people to take care of. I just couldn't focus on everything and I ended up neglecting this part alltogether. Maybe another time, in another playthough, when I am more into social engineering.
I was really surprised by the quality this game offered me at the beggining, Great graphics and great voice acting, everything to have you focused on what is about to happen. However, the story became too complicated for me to follow, and that quickly turned my gaming experience, into something mechanical. I wasn't invested anymore because it was not clear to me what I was doing or where I was going. I was just trying to solve puzzles (which are all pretty decent but sometimes too linear for my taste), hoping that at one point maybe all will make sense. That never happened, and the ending left me wondering if my dialog choices / actions along the way had an influence on it ( spoiler: they didn't) I hope the next game from this studio will be able to offer a more pleasant playing experience, seeing how it always references and pays homage to the Monkey Island series - maybe they can learn more from that.
Not quite an adventure game - in the sense that there are no puzzles to solve - but more like a visual novel in which events unravel as you time goes by. Nothing wrong with that, just that I was never quite sure that my choices ever lead to diferent outcomes ( and from what I read on the internet, they don't ) - so it's not like a Telltale's adventure game. The scenery and voice acting really are great and contribute immensely to the game's atmosphere.I will not hide the fact that I was first attracted by the prospect of exploring the beautiful wilderness which I might never get to see. I got pretty attached to the characters - they really seem to be having chemistry , and the story offers some nice twist and turns, keeps you engaged - but in the end I kept wondering if I missed a clue or something that would have tied the story better, if I could have changed the situation in any way... probably not. It left me without a sense of closure ( don't laugh - but now that I think about it, I had the same feeling when I finished reading "The catcher in the rye" ). But maybe that's how it should be, as life doesn't always offer you closure and you have to find ways to cope with it and to accept what's happening to you. And after a while that lack of closure turns into a love for life and its unpredictableness, with a touch of optimism. Maybe I will replay it someday. But I do recommend that you give this a try, also. You certainly will enjoy the ride and maybe you will see the ending they way I do.
the list of game breaking bugs is too long to list here. a google search will do it. just be ready to restart / replay if one of the occurs - me, I stopped playing - will wait more time before trying it again. shame that they didn't work on fixing the bugs
this is a great thing, especially if you think about that fact that it was done by people with no prior experience and it's free. the team really outdid itself and surprised the entire gaming world. it is like playing gothic 2 for the first time, but a new story, new character, a whole lot of gameplay imporvements ( food recipes, new weapons, new potions, etc ) and a huge open world ( it's normal to get lost in the archolos city for the first few hours - never had that problem in gothic 2 with khorinis ) can we make this a thing? every 2 years a new mod comes out for gothic 2 that just adds to the original story? i would only play these and i would be happy
Following Gothic 2, this seemed great at first. Huge open world, beautiful scenery, new factions ... what can go be bad about that? Well, after some hours of gameplay, it started to lose it's magic. There was not always a good sense of direction , of where and how can you contribute to the story. With a world this big, the variety of weapons, or items in general, seemed small compared to Gothic 2 and you kind'o know what to expect from every chest / character looted. No thrill of finding something. Add to all these some buggy quests and game engine fails (ex: you have to follow a character that walks through solid rock instead of taking the road ), and a combat system that feels inferior to Gothic 2. I could not finish the game , partly because of a diminishing interest, partly because of dissapoinment with buggy quests. Piranha Bytes made this game too big , too long, but could not add enough substance to it. Like a glass filled only 2/3. Maybe I'll try it again with all patches I can get my hands on, but as GOG ships it, it's only worth 3 stars.
If you expect this game to continue where Risen 1 left off (besides partially for the story), you're out of luck. The atmosphere and the gameplay are totally different. When I say different, i mean not in line with the Gothic series that Risen tries to carry forward: - much easier than Gothic or Risen 1 - different character development - reduced freedom of movement ( can only climb up obvious step-like terrain) - different combat mechanics Having said that and putting aside those expectations, Risen 2 is a fun game, with beautiful graphics ( i find the sunsets on those beaches beautiful), with lots of treasure hunting, artifacts and an interesting story line. Just that it didn't Risen up (pun intended) to it's predecessors as it takes a different direction in the definition of an RPG.
...because this game will lock you in and immerse you in it's great atmosphere and story. I can't add any more to what all the other reviews here have said about this game, so it's better to just enjoy the experience. A note of warning, though: this is not fully 100% compatible with new systems and win10 so it requires you to download some community patches in order to make it work on a higher resolution that 1280x1024.
