I bought a PS1 long box copy of this game about a year ago. But it froze on an early cutscene. It's nice to be able to finally play through the whole game. And what a game. For those looking for fast action gameplay this is DEFFINETLY NOT your cup of tea. This game is about slow, immersive exploration. And deep creepy atmosphere. If that's what you're after then this game is prefect for you. I only have two complaints about the game. First, The walking is on rails and not all connect to all points in the room. So for example you may have to go all the way from one side of the room to another just to get to a table in the middle of the room. You get used to it. But it really breaks the immersion sometimes. Second. As I'm sure you've all noticed this DOS version of the game is interlaced and has scanlines. Much Like most Classic FMV titles like Phantasmagoria. But unlike Phantasmagoria you cannot adjust the settings to run without the scanlines. But they honestly aren't that bad and you get used to them after a few minuets of play. Though if they bother you all other versions of the game run without scanlines. (As far as I know.) This game comes HIGHLY reccomended!
First of all let me just say this. I buy simple looking games like this for their story. On that front this game has one of the most emotional and well written plots I have ever played. The ending WILL make you cry. However the gameplay will be a little over simplistic for some people. Most of the time you are just making your way through dialog to progress the story, then looking for the items to set up the next plot point, rinse, repeat, enjoy the emotional roller coaster you are about to go on. Again, I came for the story, and I think this game is well worth playing if you are looking for something special in that department. But if you're looking for complex, thought provoking gameplay, go play something else.
I've been getting into horror oriented games lately because I find they often have rich stories and characters, as well as give me a good scare. And this game certainly doesn't disappoint. With a basic yet intriguing plot and creepy design this game sets a mood that prays of the fear it brings. Not to mention the gameplay is great especially later on when new points of strategy are added. Highly recommended.
