I used to play the original a lot back in the 90s, and I was always fond of the memories. Driven by nostalgia, I recently bought this anniversary edition, and I have to say I still had a lot of fun playing through the campaign. In comparison with the original, I think it managed to keep everything that made it one of the best Settlers back then, including the road building, the visuals of the architecture, the layout of the menus. I honestly think that if you enjoyed the original, this one will be just as much fun, with better graphics, less clunky camera control, much more readable texts (the Gold edition, even though playable even under Windows 10, looks pretty bad on larger screens, and texts are also very hard to read). This is a slow kind of game, and Settlers 2 is probably one of the least complex out of the lot, but it's perfect for casual players like myself, and it's very possible to find tens of hours of entertainment in it.
I am using Windows 10 and I can confirm that this works for me. I don't know if it's useful to mention that I have an Nvidia graphics card (970), you might need to tune your Nvidia Control Panel settings right though. As far as the game goes: I've loved it for a long time, can't wait to play it again after so long :D
