Spacecom

At once soothing and engaging

The first thing you'll notice about Spacecom is its minimalist approach to gaming. You will be using a highly stylized representation of space and space battles. What you are seeing is more akin to what a real-life general might be looking at in his/her command centre, compared to what most of us are used to in a game. Older gamers might recall a similar approach taken by Harpoon 2, for example. Gameplay-wise, the mechanics are simple and straightforward. The scale is strategic and much of the actual battle is highly abstracted. Still, one must be able to identify choke points and strategic locations (planets) in order to be able to win the game. In all, this is a nice title to have. It will provide an engaging distraction and the music is soothing, provided you're into that kind of music. Gamers wanting more visceral take of space battle might get bored by the presentation, though. But if you can take the game as what it is, you will find it to be a worthwhile buy. Finally, for Linux users in particular 64-bit distro users, my experience suggests that the game will only run after you install ia32-libs. The other version I tried (Mac) works out of the box.
