This is not an FPS game. This is a rail-shooter, that lets you move around a little. Dumbed down for console children, with a narrow field-of-view comparable to looking down a roll of toilet paper. The FIRST weapon you have is a grenade launcher for blowing stuff up. "BANG! POP! WOW!" say the kids. But that's all there is. Lots of hype and explosions, but very little substance. It's a Michael Bay game. Ammo management? No such thing. You'll trim over health and ammo packs like you're trying to wade through the ballpit at McDonalds. RF1 had plenty of issues. It tried to tell a story but had lots of flaws. But this doesn't even feel like Red Faction. I just finished RF1 for the first time, with NO nostalga for playing it previously. I enjoyed it (though again, there's plenty of issues). This, I'm immediately revolted once the gameplay starts.
you will understand how much the developers hate you. I thought this was "Heroes of Hammerwatch with hand made levels using the Serious Sam IP" what I got was pure. pain. I love the hammerwatch games. I thought I loved the developer. The game is an absolute. slog. on hard difficulty (and not even 'Serious Sam' difficulty). Speaking as someone who played FPS games since the early 90s, and beat all STALKER games on STALKER difficulty using only pistols. This game is sadistic. The difficulty is [UNFAIR]. It doesn't come from game mechanics. When to dodge, what gun to use? No problem. It comes from the developers lack of understanding of game mechanics. Remember the cubes in heroes of hammerwatch? Shoot the cube, enemies spawn, kill enemies, shoot the cube, repeat till cube is dead. The cube fights are here. Except now they spawn kamikazes. Which WOULD be okay, except they spawn randomly which includes literally on top of you, or, the exact direction you would dodge/roll out of the huge spawning pool of enemies. Nope, sorry, he was BEHIND YOU. Because you had all of .0025 seconds to react to that. On hard difficulty you get about TWO hits before you die. So imagine how much suffering you'll have when one (or both) of those hits were taken from you unfairly? You will die, over, and over, and over. And hilariously, even the games SAVE SYSTEM will kill you. Because it'll respawn you, in the middle of enemies. It'll respawn you with no guns. It'll respawn you with no health. And that moment when you took serious unfair damage? CONGRATS. AUTOSAVED. You will go from max health and armor, to 5 HP and no armor, in less than a second. More unfairness? Enemies (especially bosses) that can shoot at you from OUTSIDE THE SCREEN. They can literally shoot further than you, and the second you come into range the boss has already started his super-mega-ultra-attack spamming waves after wave of fireballs at you. The list just goes on. This game was not ready for primetime.
Multiplayer is literally unplayable, and single player is mostly unplayable. Crashes, desync, phasing through things, animals freeze or are invincible. Pressing tab to bring up inventory... crashes the menu system and makes the game freeze. After 3+ hours we basically gave up even trying.
The game is nauseating. The camera movement, camera system, the walking view bob, it's all terrible on your eyes. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The combat is something a kid would put on steam for free and slap a "made with unity" sticker on it. The stealth is pretty basic. The controls are some of the worst controls I've ever experienced in any game ever. Everything you see and interact, feels wrong and sluggish. The guns are impossibly inaccurate. We're talking you can miss hitting an entire house with a revolver at 20 feet. You manage up to 3 characters. Want to know how you do that? All their viewscreens are constantly displayed and you just switch character. Your view doesn't change. So your second and third characters have tiny screen area, while the first character does nothing. And worse, all "screens" have a heavy "CRT filter" to make them warped and noisey because "atmosphere". It's got a cool hand-painted graphics atmosphere, and a story that definitely feels like something more is going on and you're probably working for the bad guys. Too bad you'll never see that story because the gameplay is unplayable. The average game time for ALL players on GOG is... two hours.
Everyone reviewing this is like, reviewing their nostalgia. This game is super finicky and being off by a single pixel can kill your dudes. The SECOND LEVEL has jumps that have to be positioned and timed down to the right 100 milliseconds. This is stupid. The world makes better games now because we have options.
This game can be fun, but it is VERY MUCH a game for little kids. The quests feel like Scribblenauts and the dialog is chock full of cringey dog and cat pun substitutions for every word. So if you're buying this for a kid, it's gonna be fine. If you're just playing it as an adult, it's going to get repetitive pretty fast. You'll skip quest conversations because they're so cringey--and none of them matter you just follow the white arrow to your next place. The combat is basically "press A to kill the enemy", and ONCE YOU UNLOCK IT roll away. Then you unlock roll attack and just smash A and X together which does a roll attack. Attack, roll away, attack, roll away. For hours.
