If you've played any other game in the Dragon Age series, you might remember the weird controls and dubious AI. Both are way worse in this game. If you leave your party members alone for half a second they will seek out the closest trap and throw themselves at it.
It took a while to really click, but once it did, the motions of the enemies feel natural.
