I have spent many hours playing this game. The amount of detail in the mechanics and the size of the tech tree is astonishing. I found it fun to play without enemies to be able to get to the end, though playing with them is also fun.
Disclaimer: I have only played Tropico 4 and 5. While the graphics in Tropico 5 are a great improvement, the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. It feels like certain choices are forced on you and small mistakes can cost you the game. Some features are also missing, such as the ability to stop immigrants arriving, as was possible in Tropico 4. (Due to some issue regarding sound in Windows 10 which causes the game to crash, I have been playing without sound, so I have missed that aspect as well).
This game is a classic, with a great and novel concept, and it certainly stood out in 1990! However, playing it now is frustrating as the animations are dreadfully slow, which makes it very frustrating. It takes absolute ages to move around. I eventually resorted to finding a walkthrough just so I could tick off having finished this game. For many this game will only be fun in order to relive the nostalgia of what was once an immensely popular and original game.
Very well thought out, mesmerizing and interesting gameplay, intuitive and well-documented interface. Haven't enjoyed a game this much in a long time.
