Until the recent release on GOG, I had never even heard of Moonbase Commander. I had recently had a hiatus from gaming however I frequently check GOG's new releases in case something really special comes out. I read information supplied by the reviews here and tried out the demo. Originally I'm not sure if I would have liked Moonbase Commander. I used to be very dedicated to playing games and had I played this game earlier, would have passed it off as too limited, given that there is no storyline or gameworld to pour hours into. The gameplay, while showing a sophisticated approach and take on the usual strategy fair, may have seemed too basic. However, given that I invest far less time on average into games, Moonbase Commander has proven great! It takes at most times for me under an hour to play through a map. As a now "casual gamer", this is a perfect amount of time. Each game has a certain degree of unpredictability due to the fact that there exists no usual "rush tactics". All weapons are available from the start since each side begins with enough points to use the most expensive units, worth 7 "energy points". This clears out alot of what I used to think as wasted time before the real meat of a strategy game begins. From the first turn, its excitement as you don't know what you can expect from your opponent. There are also other fine details to enjoy with this game. The map is structured such that there are no borders where no gameplay is. Shooting something towards the end of the map makes it repear at the other extreme. This allows for flanking tactics and numerous ways of manuevering around your enemy when there is more or less a standstil with neither side having an advantage with arms or energy surpluses. I thoroughly recommend this game and hope that others can also enjoy!
