I will preface this review by saying this game is as niche as it gets. For those who occupy the niche, it will be the best game ever. For those outside the niche, they will hate it. Do you spend your spare time reading project rho (atomic rockets website)? Are you a fan of hard scifi like the Expanse, Heinlein, etc? Do you like cold war esque spy thriller stuff? Do you like the idea of shadowy organizations pulling the strings behind every government? Do you like the idea of ship battles that adhere to the idea of newtonian mechanics? Do you like the idea of pouring over 40 different ship engines trying to figure out how to design the best ship for your current needs? If you answered yes to these questions you might like this game. Do you hate having to open external resources to understand what to do? Do you hate obtuse user interfaces? Do you hate the idea of a game taking 100 to 300 hours to complete? Do you hate the idea of fighting an enemy who WILL beat you and destroy your hard work? Do you hate the idea of 95% of your gameplay being staring at a rotating earth? If you answered yes to these questions you might not like this game. At its heart Terra Invicta is the quintessential 4x game. It is very hard to get into, there is a large learning curve, it can feel obtuse and nonsensical at first. You probably need to watch a bunch of youtube tutorial videos on it. But if you enjoy games like Dwarf Fortress or Stellaris, you'll be fine.
I want to preface this by saying my game was full of graphical bugs. Then I updated my drivers and they all disappeared. Using a 1070 at 1080p with settings mostly maxed, have 40-60 fps which is fine for me. I have a feeling a lot of the people complaining are either using old drivers, or old hardware. Either way it's their fault. The game itself is great. I'm 8 hours in, and I can't wait to play more. It's a big rough around some of the edges, but I honestly think people are so jarred by bugs because the rest of the game's presentation is absolutely incredible. I can't put into words how amazing the presentation and level of detail is. The gameplay is great. On very hard I'm having a blast killing guys. The city looks small at first, but once you start driving around it it's actually very large. The cyberpunk aesthetic is spot on, exactly how I pictured the sprawl in Neuromancer in my head. Voice acting is great, I had my qualms about Keanu at first but he's perfect as Johnny. My biggest complain really is that promotional material for the game heavily spoil certain parts. You'll see what I mean. So anyways, take all reviews whining about bad performance with a grain of salt, unless you have an old pc.
