Close Combat 3: The Russian Front

Great game, but tricky to run on Win 11

I like the old Close Combat games, but they're difficult to get going, and touchy even when they run. First run - nothing, Gog Galaxy spluttered 'Syncing' then nothing, back to the 'Play' button. Then... 2. Go to the executable program ( cc3.exe wherever your 'Close Combat 3' directory / folder is). 2.1 Right-click cc3.exe and in 'Properties' set compatibility to 'Win 98 / Win Me'. Ok. - I got the message 'Unable to add dsound.stream', what? (The intro videos don't work). 2.2 HOLD DOWN THE CONTROL KEY WHILE YOU (double-)CLICK-TO-START cc3.exe. - You get the options screen. This is great, can fix some things from here. 2.3 Turn off videos. - I also set video-resolution to 1280x768, and scroll speed to slow. It worked! I ran a quick test battle! But, I can't alt-tab or leave the CC screen or it goes all weird. It also now starts from Gog galaxy, I'm not sure it remembers it's settings all the time though. At least, that's a start.

Sam & Max Hit the Road

Funny characters, awful gameplay.

The characters talking can be funny but the jokes wears out after a while. You can not click on objects properly which means you gotta scum save just before timed tricky points and try again and again to progress. The puzzles have no logic, you've got to micro scan every scene for things to pick up, then try to combine or use everything at every point in the game. So, unless you wanna spend hours getting to the next scene, use a walkthrough. The characters walk very slowly, which if you've got to repeat sections (see above) is very tedious. I doubt I'll go much further with it, the good bits aren't worth my time and annoyance. Might watch a walkthrough vid instead to get the funny without the hassle.

Epic Pinball: The Complete Collection

Some tables are better than others.

Yeah... not bad some of these tables. I played a lot of real pinball when I was a young delinquent, and I was real good at it on the good machines. Most of the tables in this game pi55 me off, they remind me of rip-off machines in real life. Down the guts or side too easy, weak flippers, dead bumpers, etc. I do like the way that different tables 'feel' different to play, some feel old, some more modern in their 'action'. Most of them are just annoying though. Games like Yoku's Island Express have a lot better pinball feel (note Yoku's is not pure pinball though, it's got a metroidvania story too). A few tables in this set are pretty good. I like the abstract 'Enigma' table the best, it's an unusual way to play pinball. I will play this occasionally. Worth a few bucks on special.

Descent: Freespace Battle Pack

Freezes Win11 all compatibility settings

This game freezes my Win 11 (just after it resizes and everything looks huge). After six ctrl-alt-del restarts, and five different compatibility tries (from Win 95 to Win 8) I'm giving up. Pity, but I'm quite happy with Tachyon right now, which worked right outta the box, so cbb with this game. Maybe one day I'll read this game's forums, there's a lot of mods etc. for the FS games, FS2 in particular. 2 stars (should be 1 star really) for the possiblity that fans can make this work, looks good in the pics.
