Mafia: Definitive Edition

Polished and elevated, yet less soul

Everything you would expect from a modern remake is there. The graphics are better, the art direction is arguably better, the game is tighter, the gunplay is modernized, etc. Part of the appeal of the original Mafia was that it was an arcade/simulation hybrid, and the latter part is mostly gone. Cops don't go after you for runnign reds, you can bang up the racing car (an open wheeled car) without any negative effect even in "classic" mode, and even the gunplay, while polished, is a bit more of a cover shooter/shooting gallery. The music has also changed. While it's still good, it's nowhere near as iconic as the original soundtrack. To me, something important was lost when the driving changed from "weird old car simulator" to something a bit more video gamey. Regardless, it's a 4/5 remake even with those caveats, and if someone doesn't care about that, it will likely be a 5/5.
