Karate Survivor

Excellent Beat'em-up Roguelike

I have to hold back a 5th star in this rating because when I installed the game, I chose English as the language, but the game started in traditional Chinese. I had to figure out where the settings menu was to change it to English again. After that awkward start the rest of the experience is very fun! The game does a great job making you feel like the star of a martial-arts action movie. Similar to other roguelike survival games such as Vampire Surviors or Brotato, you enter a level, and try to survive until the time limit, at which point a boss shows up. Like those other games, you level up as you defeat enemies and if you die on a run you unlock more features to use on your next attempt. However, this game differentiates itself in some key ways. 1. Your unarmed combat starts off weak, but you can survive by using the environment! buckets, ladders, boards, mops, pool cues and crates can all be used to bash enemies and keep them away from you until your kungfu levels up. 2. You start each level with a 1 move of a 6 hit combo unlocked. the combo activates automatically every few seconds, encouraging you to account for timing and distance. 3. As you level, you unlock more moves in the combo and discover it has layers! There are different styles whose moves buff each other. Each style has different families of moves that focus on area of effect, critical hits, or damage over time. Most of the time, your unarmed damage will outpace your improvised weapon damage, so you start most runs like a Jackie Chan character and end them like the Fist of the North Star.
