Caves of Lore

Surprisingly good find

There is something oddly charming about this game. On the graphical side, I realize it may not be for everyone. But I have a soft spot for 2D with distinctive art style, so this hit just the right spot. Music is nice and calming, albeit with little variety. I did mute it at some point due to the repetitive combat track. The story is told through keyword-based dialogues, as well as numerous books and notes. That is to say, those caves contain quite a bit of lore. The story has a slightly... nebulous quality, much like the fog that permeates most of the land. While it contains some of standard trappings, it managed to get me hooked. I found myself reading all of lore and it helps that the writing is up to snuff. The turn-based combat is excellent, with tons of abilities and spells, which are are learned and improved by use. If I had to nitpick, I'd say there are too many encounters and that the combat gets rather easy. It is further trivialized by the enchanting and sharpening mechanics. Caves of Lore reminded me of the good old days, but without preying on nostalgia, like so many other indies. It does its own thing and does it really well.
