Disco Elysium - The Final Cut

So... what kind of cop are you?

Disco Elysium is a brilliant trip worthy of praise for its unconventional genre mixing of the neo-noir detective thriller and classic isometric RPGs. I had little clue what I was getting myself into when starting this game, and after 36 hours of a completed playthrough, I still am a little unsure what I really played. Sure, it's branded as a detective RPG, but that felt superfluous to its clever underpinnnings. From the sordid visuals of a city postwar to the ecstasy-infused neon interactions, Disco is weird and it won't let you forget it. In every sense, the game successfully defines its own style as it sucks you into its own swirl of abnormal untaming. It sees a new world unfold (highly derivitative of ours, of course) with whole cultures, races, political and economic systems reinvented. Under this guise, the game can say what it wants about whatever culture, whatever system, whatever ideology without fear of ruffling our feathers. It makes it all up for its own pleasure, allowing the player to separate reality from the fantasy just enough so that terms such as "moralist" or "ultraliberal" are less distracting. It then gives the player enough perspective and motivation to see what belief system makes the most sense to them as they make vital choices. You see, in this RPG, everything is measured. Your actions, your words and your time spent. When you are asked 'what kind of cop are you?' that is not rhetorical. It is prophecy. Disco Elysium has a lot to say. I'd be foolish not to recommend this experience. This world you've stumbled on is odd, corrupt and broken. What you do will either remedy the terror or further it. By golly, you'll feel good doing it too.
