Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine - Master Crafted Edition

Get the original instead on a discount

The game is good, but the remaster doesn't add anything substantial. Gameplay upgrades are only a UI improvement (and that seems to suffer from some upscaling issues), changes to the levels sometimes clip through old terrain (that alone should be embarrassing), the color swap for the orcs can't be turned back via a setting even though it removed their iconic red color, some new effects are literally just stock footage of a fire burning that has been scaled up way too much. The graphical improvements are restricted to updated textures which are mostly an improvement, but the remaster doesn't take advantage of the increased rendering power of modern machines. The whole game could be rendered at highest LOD nowadays yet pop-in is still omnipresent, the remastered audio was remastered so well I can't tell the difference in gameplay unless I specifically compare side by side... Overall, this seems like an extremely cynical cash-grab after the success of Space Marine II. It might be worth it if it was a 5€ DLC purchase on top of the original or something like that. 40€ is just an insult.

Great game, great narrative

This is a very good game! I would recommend trying to get all memories and reading through the entire story with them. It gives new meaning and depth to everything you do. There is a lack in variety in missions and maps, but this does not diminish an otherwise great game with a gripping narrative that is told with care and empathy. It's quite beautiful.

Good game made with unpaid child labor

The game is really lovely (I own it on Steam). Sadly, the second I learned that it was made by the exploitation of many different (often underage) artists who were overworked, given contradictory direction and often did not get paid, I couldn't open it again. I am really saddened by this because the game was very successful. If the head honcho had simply paid the dues I would give this 4 or 5 stars, but he never did. He left people hanging and took off with the profits. I realize the reviews are meant to only be about the game, but I believe this is about the game. It's an awesome game made by many people with a lot of passion. But buying or playing the game doesn't support any of them. It supports the predator who exploited them. (GOG, if this violates the terms for reviews, please take it down. I would then however posit that there should be some way to visibly communicate the working conditions for developers or ongoing scandals of games. Apologies for any inconvenience.)
