A Story About My Uncle

So worth it! And learn the alphabet!

I decided to give this a go since it was on sale. Boy, was I surprised. First, this game is gorgeous and I am still wondering how it even worked smoothly on my computer (I have a 2009 iMac with a core 2 duo and a 256 mb radeon). I was so drawn by the gameplay, the story and the environment that I finished it in one sitting (and it took me over 8 hours). It's not a very long game, but it's like it was supposed to be: short and sweet. There are collectibles attached to achievements that give you something extra to look for during a replay, and that unlock some new features. I will not dwell on the details because there are other reviews that have done that very well already. If you are reading this during a sale, don't think twice and give it a go! Don't forget to enjoy and explore the places thoroughly. TIP: the world includes a special alphabet used for things you find along the way. You can learn to read it in two ways, either by copying some text that the game will give you a translation of (and solving the puzzle) or finding the translation-sheet in game at a certain moment, in "someone's" possession. Reading what you find will enhance the immersion incredibly! If you are too lazy for that, you can find the alphabet and/or the translations online as well, but I truly recommend the experience of reading yourself.

Return of the Obra Dinn

No words to truly describe this...

One of the most immersive, interesting and fresh experiences in gaming that I ever had. A breakthrough in terms of visual effects, old-school gaming, with a perfect balance of great voice acting and perfect storytelling. This game is a pinnacle of "show, don't tell" examples and it's amazing how it can keep you engaged without ever giving you animated scenes at all during the investigation. A game like this would never be possible back in the day of its origins, but it would never be possible today without the influence of the old monitor aesthetics. And god, the surprises are awesome. I can't recommend this enough. It's hard to explain but with half an hour of gameplay you will surely know what I mean.

Diablo + Hellfire

Not enough

Too expensive for what it really is (a roguelike-wannabe with pretty graphics for the time, and just a fraction of the options of a real RL). Also, why just a Windows version? I have the original disc and even this old relic runs on mac...
