Warlords I + II

A childhood Favorite

I played the heck out of warlords 1 on my parent's dos pc back in the late 80s early 90s when the game was still new. Though I never played warlords 2 I did play 3, and the game only got better. I spent hours and hours on the one map for warlords 1. Pure nostalgia and an important part of my childhood. The game is a turn based strategy game taking place in midevil fantasy. The units each castle can produce are set in stone, so you get special units by either starting or taking over castles that naturally can produce them. Want elven archers? Start as green. Want Griffon riders? Start with dark blue. Want dwarves? Start with yellow. Or you can attack and capture those castles in time. All colors always start in the same spot and there is no randomization in the first game. However there is a ton of strategy to be used. Who to go for first? How to defend? Who to play as? The game also allows hotseat multiplayer. Now that I know this game is on here I will definitely be playing this old dos game again.

Starbound

too slow to update

I have had this game on steam for well over a year now. When I got it I knew it was in an early state, but their lack of updating it at a regular pace and removal of some features (temperature and food requirements) has made me prefer Terraria over this game. Its still fun, and I like the starship you start with, but its just lacking in a lot of areas that used to be unique to this game. Its good for a while, but you'll want to go back to Terraria after a few hours like I did.

Battle Chess Special Edition

Had this game as a kid

This game is how I learned how to play chess when I was 4 years old on my dad's Atari 800. Its a good game and makes chess fun. That said, if you don't like chess then this game isn't for you, but as far as accurate chess simulators go with a challenging computer controlled side, this is definitely one of them. It holds a nostalgic spot in my heart simply for the fact I stated above.

Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection Two

This makes me giddy

I'm not very good at writing reviews, but I will say I've been wanting the SSI Gold Box D&D games for years now. I finally got to get them all thanks to gog! Thank you! I had a copy of Pool of Radiance back in the day on my 486 and I was too young and didn't understand dungeons and dragons rules at all so I sucked horribly and never got past the start area. Now I'm in my 30s and understand D&D much better. Thank you so much, GoG, for adding these and taking the time to get them to work on modern windows. I have already sunk about 15 to 20 hours into Pool of Radiance and I will not be done until I play a lot more.

Divinity 2: Developer's Cut

Not worth your time

I bought this on steam a while back during a winter sale, and gave it a legitimate try. The story is good, but not engaging enough. It feels like its trying to be a single player MMO where you go do quests and turn them in to level up. Kill X number of baddies or collect Y number of things isn't engaging at all. I also have complaints about the balancing in this game. Using a shield is only gimping yourself. You can't use it to block and it doesn't increase your defense (wtf?). So the idea of playing the way you want to isn't even an issue. Either you play what makes you powerful or you suck badly at combat. Also, combat is either really really challenging and downright unfair in some spots or its too easy. It does not have any sort of a difficulty curve. Its more like a difficulty earth quake. It'll be hard for one fight then randomly be easy for several then you'll get into a hard fight again. No reason and no sense of progression. I will say the dragon combat is fun though, but does not fit with an RPG. Its more like an action game at that point. Also the invisible height celing randomly changes seemingly for no reason, so if you want to fly up and survey your terrain you can't... or you can... depends. On what? I don't know. There are way way better games out there. I wouldn't consider this game worth your time unless it was under $2 and you were really desperate for this type of WRPG.

Eschalon: Book II

A great CRPG from the good old days

Not really from the good old days, but it sure feels like it. The story is epic and involving, the character creation is extensive and allows you to play how you want to, and the interface reminds me of greats like Baldur's Gate and Ultima. If you enjoy CRPGs from the 90s as much as I do then you need to buy this game and the first one as well!
